For those of you that don’t know me, I am an avid golfer who played professionally for over 20 years and am also a real estate agent for one of the largest real estate firms in Canada located in Whistler, BC. Naturally my love of golf and real estate merge and I am often seeking beautiful places to spend time that also offer great golfing. Lucky for me Whistler fits this description to a tee (excuse the pun). Besides Whistler there are other destinations in North America that are great places to live and also happen to offer fantastic golfing. Here are my top 5 suggestions for places to live in North America for golfers.

Of course I have to put Whistler at the top of the list. It has been my home for over 20 years and I could play every golf course in my sleep- that’s how often I’ve golfed here. Big Sky Golf Course just north of Whistler is my favourite course, not only does it offer unparalleled beauty, it is the perfect combination of technical and enjoyable. But it’s not only the world-class golfing that makes Whistler an incredible place to live. In the off season, there is a winter wonderland of world-class skiing and snowboarding, and the pristine natural environment and untouched wilderness is a constant inspiration and is easily accessible from anywhere in Whistler. The unique Whistler chalet style architecture, beautiful luxurious homes, ski- in ski out and golf course lined properties make this town a desirable place to live for not only golfers, but outdoor enthusiasts of all types.

It would be hard to dispute Phoenix as one of the top places for golfers in North America (and the world!) With over 200 golf courses, a vibrant restaurant scene and desert resort lifestyle easily accessible there is a reason snowbirds from around the world flock to Phoenix for winter to spend their time on the greens. The real estate market in Phoenix is beginning to pick up pace and new construction in the city is one of the strongest in America.

The Okanagan Valley

With over 2000 hours of sun every year, the Okanagan Valley is considered the tropics of Canada and each summer vacationers head to the Okanagan to enjoy world-class golfing. Take your pick from an array of championship courses set amongst lakeside landscapes, vineyards, mountains and city lights. With something for every skill level and one of the longest golf seasons in Canada, The Okanagan Valley is an ideal place for golf enthusiasts to live. The property market in the Okanagan is picking up pace and property demand and prices are feeling the impact of Vancouver’s increasingly expensive market. Many parts of the Okanagan still remain affordable and it’s not uncommon to see 3-4 bedroom single family homes for under $400K.

Monterey, located on the coast of Southern California is a golfing gem with enviable golf courses stretching along the coast of the Pacific Ocean. The luxurious lifestyle, laid back feeling and small community atmosphere make Monterey a desirable place to live for golf lovers and non golf lovers alike. Real estate in Monterey comes with a hefty price tag with the median sales price USD $709,000; if you can afford a place in Monterey you will wake up to beautiful Southern Californian sunshine and state-of-the art golf courses each day.

There are ten golf courses at seven venues in Kauai with signature golf courses built by Jack Nicklaus and Robert Trent Jones, Jr. The resort golf courses offer picture perfect scenery and everything you would expect from a world-class golf course in Hawaii. Imagine roughs lined with lava rock and greens with views of the deep azure-blue ocean. As with any desirable destination such as Kauai real estate isn’t cheap but what can you expect when living on an idyllic tropical island in Hawaii?

Whether you are seeking a destination where year-round golf is possible or would instead prefer to expand your portfolio of adventure with a season or two of golf complemented by other activities- here are the top 5 places to live for golf lovers. Although I can’t help you buy a home in Hawaii, California, Arizona or the Okanagan Valley (I can however recommend you to realtors in the area), if Whistler appeals to the golf lover in you then don’t hesitate to contact me for more information about the Whistler Real Estate Market (I might be able to show you a course or two in the process!)
